Ingredients and Substitutions
This is just an overview of the ingredients I used with possible alternatives and why I may have used them. See the recipe card below for a complete list of ingredients and quantities.
For the Pizza Dough Without Yeast
- Self Raising Flour - Make an Easy Homemade Pizza with self raising flour. There is no need to add any yeast because the flour already contains a raising agent. If you can get hold of Wholemeal self raising flour, give that a try.
- Salt - Essential for flavour, I prefer to use sea salt, table salt is fine.
- Water - Use cold or tepid water, only add enough to bring the dough together.
For the Pizza Topping
- Tinned Tomatoes - Use half of a 400g tin draining some of the juice. Chop if using plum tomatoes.
- Tomato paste or Puree - This adds extra flavour to the tinned tomatoes and to the pizza.
- Herbs - Use mixed dried or fresh herbs
- Sweet Pepper - Red, yellow or green. You only need half a pepper, save the other half for another meal or another day.
- Tuna - Use about half a tin or any remaining tuna from a leftover meal.
- Mozzarella Cheese - Use a firm cheddar cheese as an alternative.
- Fresh Basil Leaves - Use to decorate the top of the pizza when baked.
Step By Step Instructions for a Quick Homemade Pizza Dough.
Step 1: To make the dough, place the flour and a pinch of sea salt in a mixing bowl and gradually add up to 150ml of cold water. By using your hands or a knife, stir the mixture until it starts to come together. Then, proceed to knead the dough for a few minutes on a lightly dusted surface until you achieve a smooth, firm dough.
Step 2: Roll out the dough into a round shape just under ½cm thick, approximately the same size as your frying pan. Tip: If your frying pan is small divide the pizza dough into two and make 2 pizza bases.
Step 3: Heat a large frying pan with a little olive oil over medium heat and carefully place the pizza dough in the pan. Cover it with a lid and cook for 3 - 4 minutes on one side, taking care not to overcook the base,
Step 4: Carefully flip the pizza over and bake for a further 3-4 mins or until baked and golden.
Note: You have the option to either store the baked pizza base for later use or prepare multiple ones and freeze them for future meals. The possibilities for pizza toppings are endless, so refer to the instructions below for a speedy tuna pizza with sweet pepper.
TIP: Have all your toppings ready before you begin.
Step 5: Gently fry the chopped sweet pepper in a large (10inch/26cm) frying pan over medium heat with a tablespoon of olive oil. Season with a pinch of sea salt and pepper and cook until the peppers have softened a little. Once the peppers are ready, transfer them to a small dish.
Step 6: Place the baked pizza dough into the frying pan that you used to cook the peppers and spread the Tomato paste evenly over the top.
Step 7: Drain some of the liquid from the half tin of tomatoes and mash them lightly with a fork then pour over the top of the tomato paste, taking care not to go too close to the edge.
Step 8: Add the cooked chopped pepper to the pizza base, break the mozzarella into chunks and scatter around the top.
Cooking Options for a Quick and Easy Homemade Pizza
Bake in the Frying pan. After adding all of your toppings to the prebaked pizza base, cover the pan with a lid and cook on medium heat for 4-5 minutes, or until the mozzarella cheese has melted and the base is crispy.
Bake in the oven. Alternatively, place the pizza on a baking tray in a preheated oven at 200deg for 10 - 15 mins or until the cheese on top has melted.
Decorate with a few dried herbs and fresh basil leaves.
Important Note: The final cooking time will depend on how thick the pizza crust is and how many toppings you add.
Storage
Prepare the pizza dough bases ahead of time and store them properly wrapped in the refrigerator for a few days until you're ready to use them. Alternatively, you can individually wrap the baked or unbaked crusts and freeze them for future use. When ready, add your desired toppings and bake in the oven, allowing for a few extra minutes of cooking time.
Cook's Tips
Tip 1: Don't have the frying pan on too high or you will burn the pizza crust base.
Tip 2: For a time-efficient meal, pre-bake the pizza crust and prepare all the necessary toppings beforehand. This will enable you to swiftly cook and serve a delicious supper in approximately 15 minutes.
