    Ingredients and Substitutions

This is just an overview of the ingredients I used to make dried bread crumbs with possible alternatives and why I may have used them.

    Slices of brown bread.
    • Bread - Whether you make your own bread or not, never let it go to waste. Use white, brown, seeded, wholemeal, or whatever you have left. All varieties are acceptable.

See the recipe card below for a complete list of ingredients and quantities.

How To Make Dried Bread Crumbs

To make these homemade Bread crumbs, preheat the oven to 200c degrees assisted and have a large baking tray ready.

    Cubes of brown bread.

Step 1: Slice the bread into cubes and place on a large baking tray.

Step 2: Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes or until the bread is dry and golden. TIP: If needed, you may need to turn the cubes over to allow them to bake evenly.

    Breadcrumbs in a thermomix.

Step 3: Allow the cubes of bread to cool a little, then place them in a food processor such as a Thermomix,

Step 4: Blitz until you have fine breadcrumbs. TIP: Finer crumbs are more likely to stick to whatever it is you are coating.

Use straight away. Try mixing in some seasoning and herbs as I did in this Oven Baked Chicken With Parmesan.

    Bag of homemade breadcrumbs.

    Storing Homemade Bread Crumbs

Allow the freshly baked dried bread crumbs to cool completely before placing them in a suitable freezer bag or container. Take out what you need, they thaw pretty quickly.

    Cook's Tips

    • If needed, you may need to turn the bread cubes over to allow them to bake evenly.
    • Finer crumbs are more likely to stick to whatever it is you are coating.

    Recipe Faqs

Can You Use Frozen Bread to Make Breadcrumbs?

Yes, defrost first before cutting it into cubes, bake it in the oven and blitz it in a food processor.

Do You Need To Cut Off the Crusts to Make Bread Crumbs?

You do not need to remove the crusts to make breadcrumbs unless they are very hard and dry. If the crusts are very thick, you may need to slice the crusts into smaller cubes before baking.

What Kind of Bread Can Be Used to Make Bread Crumbs?

Any kind of bread can be made into breadcrumbs. Sourdough, gluten-free, White or brown, wholemeal and seeded. Any variety will do.
